Yep, Trees Talk to Each Other

Riding horses with my brothers and sister through the Cook County Forest Preserves near our home as a kid, I never gave them a second thought. They were just there providing a great place not only for riding, but also for hiking and fishing as well. I’m sorry to admit, until I saw Suzanne Simard’s June 2016 TED talk How trees talk to each other I still had no idea of the amazing story of life that takes place right there under our feet. Simard is a Canadian ecologist who has study forests for 30 years. Thanks for a great meditation Suzanne.

Let’s Hop on the Bus

Following sister Simone Campbell and the “Nuns on the Bus” has given me hope in our political system. I believe sister and the nuns, are our modern day Isaiah and Jeremiah, calling us to stop worshipping false idols (money, power and prestige) and to start worshiping at the one true God’s altar, the altar of love, compassion and care for all of creation. Thank you Sister Simone and the Nuns on the Bus.

Statement on Racial Violence in the U.S.

Just sharing some well thought out ideas about the role each of us plays in today’s violence and things we can do to stop it. I especially liked: “We need to reflect on the words of Martin Luther King, Jr. – “History will have to record that the greatest tragedy of this period of social transition was not the strident clamor of the bad people, but the appalling silence of the good people.”

PAX CHRISTI USA

We at PCUSA join with all whose hearts and consciences are pierced with outrage from the deaths of yet two more African-American men killed by excessive police force in Louisiana and Minnesota.  And as the spiral of violence deepened last Thursday night in Texas with the killing and wounding of police officers at a peaceful rally aimed to elevate the call for justice it is time for prayer and national soul-searching.

In our vision statement, we at Pax Christi USA declare that “we are a Catholic peace and justice movement that seeks to model the Peace of Christ in our witness to the mandate of the nonviolence of the Cross.”  Our vision is “a more peaceful, just and sustainable world through the efforts of our members and in collaboration with other groups.”  The violent events of this past week are a challenge to our identity and to our…

Change

Last week a friend summed up the challenge of my life. He said he hates change and he can’t stand the way things are. I totally agree, change is difficult. It’s difficult at the personal level and near impossible at the institutional level. According to a CNN Politics July 4, 2016 article, in our 200-year plus Unites States history, Americans have made more than 11,000 attempts to change the Constitution. Only 27 of them stuck.

Change is not impossible though. The Newsboys tell us how in their 2014 Sparrow Records YouTube video recording. Enjoy!
