In this past Sunday’s epistle from St. Paul, he tells us nothing can separate us from the love of God. That says to me that God is an unconditional lover of us all, neither death nor life, present or future things, powers nor any other creature will separate me from the love of God.
Neither my virtues nor my mistakes can separate me from God’s love. I don’t have to be right about science or religion. I don’t have to be without sin. God loves me. If I detect a barrier between God and me, God didn’t put it there so it must have been put there by me. Lack of faith that God loves me or that I am worthy of God’s love is the probable culprit.
Worthiness is not the issue for me nor is sin the issue—God’s love of you and me is the issue. Just before communion we say the prayer: “Lord I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul will be healed.” I sometimes remain silent and think to myself; Thank you God that worthiness is not the issue.
